What is preoperative clearance?

Preoperative clearance at Millenium Elite Primary Care is a medical evaluation in which we assess your overall health prior to undergoing a surgical procedure. It’s also called pre-surgical clearance or medical clearance. We can detect potential concerns that may indicate waiting to have surgery for safety reasons. 

What are the benefits of preoperative clearance?

Preoperative clearance is important to complete before surgery, especially if you’re an older adult, as some undetected underlying medical problems can cause complications during or after surgery. Completing pre-surgery clearance means you’re healthy enough to safely undergo your medical procedure, and any risks are minimal.

What happens during preoperative clearance?

Your preoperative clearance evaluation may consist of:

Medical history review

We discuss your medical history, ask about your medications and symptoms, and discuss your lifestyle habits during a medical history review. It’s important to tell us about any dietary supplements you might take in addition to your medications. 

Vital signs check

We check your temperature, blood pressure, and pulse to screen for possible concerns prior to surgery.

Medical exam

We listen to your heartbeat and breathing during a medical evaluation. She also check your eyes, throat, neck, abdomen, limbs, and other areas when necessary.

Diagnostic testing

Depending on the type of surgery you require, you might need lab testing, imaging procedures, heart function tests, breathing tests, or additional diagnostic tests that determine your ability to safely undergo and recover from surgery.

Do I require preoperative clearance?

Your surgeon will let you know if you need preoperative clearance prior to a surgical procedure. However, even if your surgeon doesn’t require it, you can still see us for an evaluation to ensure no underlying medical concerns exist and obtain peace of mind. 

It’s important to avoid smoking and alcohol before surgery. You might need to stop taking certain medications, and you’ll likely need to avoid foods and drinks the morning of your scheduled procedure.
