What is wound evaluation and treatment?

Wound evaluation and treatment at Millenium Elite Primary Care involves treating acute wounds caused by injuries and chronic wounds, often stemming from diabetes or venous disease. When not treated, some wounds don’t heal well or become infected over time. See us at the first sign of a wound or nonhealing wound to avoid complications.

What increases the risk of wounds?

The following increases the risk of wounds, particularly those that are nonhealing:

• Diabetes
• Venous diseases
• Falls and other injuries
• Sitting in a wheelchair
• Lying in bed for long periods
• Weakened immune system
• Poor circulation 
• Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
• Venous insufficiency 
• Physically demanding job
• Accidents
• Burns

Adopting a healthy lifestyle and managing your blood sugar if you have diabetes helps minimize your risk of developing chronic wounds. However, wounds can also develop due to acute injuries like stepping on or touching something sharp.

Which complications may warrant wound evaluation and treatment?

A common complication of wounds is an infection. Signs of infection include warmth, redness, pus, discoloration, and worsening pain. Some people with severely infected wounds, particularly those diagnosed with diabetes, require amputation.

Do I need treatment for a wound?

We discusse your symptoms and medical history to determine how to best treat an acute or chronic wound. We examine the wound and determine if it’s infected. You might be a candidate for lab testing, swabs, an ultrasound, X-Ray, or another imaging procedure.

What can I expect during a wound evaluation and treatment?

After completing a wound evaluation with us, we discuss your treatment options. You might need one or more of the following:

• Bandages
• Dressings
• Enzymatic, Autolytic, or Mechanical Debridement (removing dead or infected tissues)
• Topical medications
• Oral medicines

We follow up to ensure your treatment is effective. While most wounds can be managed in our clinic, cases that require advanced or specialized care may be referred to a surgeon or wound care center for continued treatment and follow-up while continuing to support your care throughout the process.
